Failed to invite guest user to Azure AD/Subscription even as an admin/owner role

Had an interesting issue that was relatively simple to resolve, albeit obscure. I was trying to invite some users outside our directory as contributors to a subscription. My user is a global admin and admin of the subscription I was trying to invite the users to. But when I tried to invite I got a generic error that the invite failed.

Unable to invite user
Unable to invite user [email protected]

Turns out I had turned off the feature “Admins and users in the guest inviter role can invite” in our Azure AD. To turn this on and resolve the error …

  1. Login to the Azure portal at https://portal.azure.com
  2. Navigate to Azure Active Directory –> Users and groups –> User Settings
  3. Click Yes next to?Admins and users in the guest inviter role can invite and then save.

Only admins will be able to invite and of course any users you add to the inviter role.

Yes means that admins and users in the “Guest Inviter” role will be able to invite guests to the tenant. No means they will not.
